What Is a Character Generator?
A character generator is a writing tool that turns a short description into a complete fictional person: how they look, how they behave, what they want, what they fear, and where they came from.
The random character generators of the early web rolled dice. Hair colour from one table, occupation from another, a quirk from a third. You got a list, not a person. What Makes a Character Feel Real
Every profile the generator writes covers four layers. Knowing them makes the output easier to judge and revise.
Appearance is the layer readers meet first and remember least. A good profile keeps it short and specific: one detail that suggests a history, not a police description. Behaviour is what they do under mild pressure – how they order coffee, what they do with their hands when they lie.
Motivation is the engine. It is the difference between what a character wants (the goal they would say out loud) and what they need (the change they are avoiding). The gap between the two is the arc, and this tool writes both explicitly so you can see the gap before you start drafting.
The wound sits underneath everything. It is the event in the backstory that explains the flaw, and the flaw is what makes the character choose badly at the worst moment. When a profile has a wound, the other three layers stop being a list and start being a person.
